TABULA
30 secs. of video in about a week
This project was initiated by Kaspar Daugaard, Stefan Mylleager and Lasse Nielsen as a new years resolution for 2006. Realising that we needed a "motor" for getting some video production done, we decided to make a strict, but manageable frame for producing short video clips and testing various ideas in a free enviroment. The idea is simple: Taking turns to choose 30 seconds of sound, for which all participants must produce a video clip in full DV pal resolution. Whoever chooses the music sets the deadline, but usually production time is about a week. This is just enough time to get an idea, produce a couple of rough schetches, and render the finished video. There's no time for fine-tuning, and an idea has to be chosen and tested very quickly. Not all ideas, or results, turns out equally good of course, but lots is to be learned from the process and gained from the satisfaction of having tried.

Comments: I had a really hard time coming up with something fitting for this cartoon-ish weird sound piece. I almost finished two other ideas, before creating this video the night before deadline.

Comments: Because the sound chosen contained only small changes in pitch and texture, audio-visual synchronisation had to be achieved by carefully adjusting the motion speed and -pattern to conceptually match the 'feel' of the sound. I kept the motion pattern slightly dependent of the sound to introduce an analogue noise I couldn't have synthisized. Finally, the camera path was guided in the end of the animation to coincide with the introduction of high-frequency components in the soundtrack. As a happy coincidence would have it, this caused The Anomaly in the middle to occur.

Comments: When choosing music for the first instalment in the series, I wanted something with less obvious timing possibilites, but with lots of mood. I blatantly stole the intro for Sunn o)))'s "Hell-o)))-ween", a heavy guitar drone with little change during the 30 seconds, except the first 8 seconds of silence.
